Research

In the past years both Practica Foundation as well as Project Maji have been exploring ways to close the gap between operational expenditure and income in water projects focused on rural Africa, in the interest of financial sustainability of each water point. One of our key questions is whether a different approach to hardware design and hardware seup can bridge this financial gap. Therefore, both parties decided to partner and pilot a novel modular building approach in water hardware implementation. This report details the findings from our joint pilot rolled out in Ghana.
Impact & Learning Study 2026
Water that works.
Time that returns.
What happens when communities gain reliable access to safe water? Our 2026 independent study takes a closer look.

Across six communities in Kenya, we listened to 376 households and examined how Project Maji’s water service model is shaping everyday life, from time savings and productivity to health, wellbeing, affordability and inclusion. The findings offer encouraging evidence of our contribution, while helping us identify where we can continue to improve and strengthen our approach.
