ABOUT
PROJECT MAJI

PM Logo 2024.png

Project Maji is a non-profit social enterprise that transforms lives by providing sustainable access to safe water through solar-powered solutions across rural communities in Ghana, Kenya, and Uganda. Founded in 2015 by Sunil Lalvani after witnessing children drinking contaminated water in rural Ghana, Project Maji has grown to serve over 500,000 people through 500+ installations, operating on a market-based social enterprise model where every site is self-sustaining. Using business expertise combined with community-driven approaches, we design, develop, and maintain solar-powered water kiosks equipped with mobile payment systems that secure funds for long-term operations and maintenance. Registered and operating in Ghana, Kenya, and the UAE, and an official member of the International Humanitarian City in Dubai, Project Maji is on a mission to serve 1 million people with sustainable access to safe water.

Maji x Practica

In the past years both Practica Foundation as well as Project Maji have been exploring ways to close the gap between operational expenditure and income in water projects focused on rural Africa, in the interest of financial sustainability of each water point. One of our key questions is whether a different approach to hardware design and hardware seup can bridge this financial gap. Therefore, both parties decided to partner and pilot a novel modular building approach in water hardware implementation. This report details the findings from our joint pilot rolled out in Ghana.
